My favourite corner of the house is not the most finished one. It is the chair by the window, where the light lands around ten in the morning.
There is a book there with its spine bent open, a glass that has become a vase, and a folded blanket that never quite stays folded. Nothing in it matches and somehow everything belongs.
For a long time I thought a home came together in one grand before-and-after. Now I think it happens more quietly. A branch in a jar. A lamp moved closer to the chair. The one place where you can sit without needing to do anything else.
A room does not have to be finished to be a refuge. Sometimes it only has to hold a little of the person you are becoming.
A little reminder:
You don’t have to make a moment grand for it to be worth remembering.
