Some Sundays arrive with a list. The best ones begin with the window open, coffee going cold on the table, and no particular plan at all.
I have been trying to make less of a distinction between an occasion and an ordinary day. A bowl of peaches on the table is reason enough to use the good plates. A friend dropping by is a perfectly good excuse to put flowers in a glass jar.
This little lunch began with what was already here: ripe fruit, bread from yesterday, a pot of coffee, the first of the sweet peas from the market. I pulled the linen out of the drawer and let the afternoon take its time.
Perhaps that is the whole recipe. Set the table for the people who are already here. Eat while the light is good. Leave the dishes until later.
A little reminder:
You don’t have to make a moment grand for it to be worth remembering.
